Ultimate 100 Freshman Writeup

The frosh edition of the 2007 Ultimate 100 Camp brought together many of the top freshman prospects in the country.  Standing out above all the rest was Overall MVP DB Khiry McQuay of Armwood Seffner High School in Florida.  McQuay, 5-foot-6 1/2 and 150-pounds, was the top freshman defensive back of the year, and was tremendous during 1-on-1’s with two interceptions and several defended passes.  During the 7-on-7 tournament, he also led the “White Team” to the championship with his amazing play from the safety position.  In four games, McQuay continuously made impressive plays and led the defense with his coverage calls.

 

Winning the LB MVP was Ryan Cobb of Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey.  Cobb, 5-foot-10 1/2 and 195-pounds, had a 33-inch vertical, 8’9” broad, 4.36 shuttle, 4.61 40, and had 26 reps on 135-pounds.  He was also phenomenal during the 1-on-1’s and 7-on-7 tournament, where he helped lead the “Navy Team” to a runner-up finish.

 

The QB MVP went to Derek Roback of Waverly High School in Ohio.  Roback, 6-foot-1 1/2 and 194-pounds, was fantastic with his leadership and decision making while leading the “White Team” to the 7-on-7 championship.  He also had a 4.65 40, 29.5-inch vertical, 8’7 1/2” broad, 4.48 shuttle, and 20 reps on 135-pounds.

 

Taking home the WR MVP was Torian Richardson of Byrnes High School in South Carolina.  Byrnes, 5-foot-9 1/2 and 170-pounds, was spectacular during the 1-on-1’s and even better during the 7-on-7 tournament, while playing both receiver and defensive back.  During the tournament he caught the game winning touchdown in the championship game and finished with a total of three touchdown receptions on the day.  During the combine events he had a 31-inch vertical, 8’10” broad, 4.47 40, 4.38 shuttle, and 13 reps on 135-pounds.

 

Winning the DB MVP was Hunter Whetsel of Callallen High School in Texas.  Whetsel, 5-foot-8 1/2 and 160-pounds, possesses fantastic cover skills, athleticism and speed for a freshman.  He also had a 28-inch vertical, 4.52 40, 9’0” broad, and 18 reps on 135-pounds.

 

The RB MVP went to Kwaun Williams of St. Joseph’s (Montvale) High School in New Jersey.  Williams, 5-foot-7 1/2 and 168-pounds, was equally impressive during the individual drills, 1-on-1’s, 7-on-7 tournament, and the combine events, where he had a 34.5-inch vertical, 9’7” broad, 4.61 40, 4.47 shuttle, and 12 reps on 135-pounds.

 

Coming from Stuarts Draft High School in Virginia, the DL MVP went to Zachary Glass.  At, 6-foot-1 1/2 and 215-pounds, was fantastic during the big man challenge, individual drills, and 1-on-1’s.  During the combine events he also had a 22-inch vertical, 5.25 40, 7’8 1/2” broad, and 5.14 shuttle.  

 

Winning the last positional award was OL MVP Terrace Bourne of Moyer Academy in Delaware.  Bourne, 6-foot-0 1/2 and 296-pounds, showed a spectacular combination of technique and skills during the individual drills, 1-on-1’s and big man challenge.  He also had a 5.31 40, 6’10” broad, 5.00 shuttle, and 26 reps on 150-pounds.

 

The Fastest Man Award went to RB Brian Mills of Edmond Sante Fe High School in Oklahoma.  Mills, 5-foot-8 1/2 and 175-pounds, had an event best, 4.38 40, plus a 4.37 shuttle, 9’0” broad, and 20 reps on 135-pounds.  He was also another member of the 7-on-7 championship “White Team” and scored several touchdowns to help lead his team to victory.

 

The next award is a special one, as the Dodie Donnell Memorial Award was given to WR JT Tartacoff of Montgomery High School in New Jersey.  This award goes to the athlete that displays the best on the field skills and is in memory of Dodie Donnell, a former University of Nebraska fullback, 3rd round pick of the New York Jets, and long time Hackensack High School football and track coach, who worked at the National Underclassmen Combine for the past two years until his passing this year.  Tartacoff, 5-foot-11 and 160-pounds, was phenomenal during the 7-on-7 tournament and 1-on-1’s, where he made several spectacular catches and consistently performed on the field.  During the combine events he also had a 33.5-inch vertical, 9’4” broad, 4.36 shuttle, 4.44 40, and 27 reps on 135-pounds.

 

The Leadership Award went to QB Nate Scola of Apache Junction High School in Arizona.  Scola, 5-foot-8 1/2 and 185-pounds, led his team to a 3rd place finish during the 7-on-7 tournament with his take charge and positive attitude.  He also remained focused throughout the event.  He also had a 30-inch vertical, 8’11” broad, 4.95 40, 4.61 shuttle, and 29 reps on 135-pounds.

 

The Combine King Award was given to the two players, one each for skill and line positions, who were both the best combine tester and athlete during the event.  For the skill players, the winner was DB Gideon Ajagbe of Ransom Everglades High School in Florida.  Ajagbe, 6-foot-1 and 190-pounds, had a 34.5-inch vertical, 10’3” broad, which is a freshman record, 4.31 shuttle, 4.69 40, and 21 reps on 135-pounds.  He was also tremendous during the 1-on-1’s and 7-on-7 tournament, where he was another member of the championship winning “White Team”.  Winning the award for the line players was DL Dakota Royer of JP McCaskey High School in Pennsylvania.  Royer, 6-foot-1 1/2 and 210-pounds, had an amazing 37.5-inch vertical, which is a new freshman record, a 9’3” broad, 4.32 shuttle, 4.61 40, and had 28 reps on 150-pounds.  He was also excellent during the big man challenge and individual drills.

 

Finally, a Strongest Man Award was also given to a skill and line player.  Winning for the line players was OL Shane Finnane of St. Edward Central Catholic in Illinois.  Finnane, 5-foot-10 and 216-pounds, did 34 reps on 150-pounds, to go along with a 5.10 40, 8’5” broad, 4.66 shuttle, and 27.5-inch vertical.  For the skill players, the winner was LB Sam Bergen of East Stroudsburg South High School in Pennsylvania.  Bergen, 5-foot-10 1/2 and 205-pounds,  did 38 reps on 135-pounds, plus had a 4.92 40, 8’6 1/2” broad, 4.67 shuttle, and a 30-inch vertical.  He was also tremendous during the 7-on-7 tournament.
